The Polymers Center is proud to partner with a wide range of companies who help us achieve our mission to increase knowledge, provide technical support, and develop emerging technologies in the polymers industry. From injection molding training, to materials testing and robotics, our partners help us showcase the latest and greatest technology the industry has to offer.

In-Plant Recycling and Reclaim of Extruded/Molded Plastic Scrap for Improved Sustainability

Producers of extruded/molded products have three main options for dealing with their internal scrap: They can reuse it, sell it, or dispose of it. For all three, some type of re-processing is of some benefit. In this course we will review the logistics, economics, and processing technologies typically used for extruded/molded products, with the main focus on the in-house recovery of scrap that is then fed back into the raw material stream...An important first step in your plant’s sustainability journey.

The main points of discussion are:

  • Understanding the scrap being produced during the extrusion/molding process
  • Review on-line reclaim options for continuous production waste
  • Review the economics/logistics of disposal, toll processing and sale of production scrap
  • Cost justifications for processing production scrap internally
  • Economics of bringing in outside industrial scrap for use in products produced
  • Considerations for the extrusion/molding production process with additional levels of reclaim input
  • Effects of reclaim material variations, such as bulk density, viscosity, purity may have on the final product
  • Comprehensive review of all required processing technologies for recovery of plastic scrap
  • Material handling, size reduction, metal and fines separation, washing and sortation, pelletizing
  • Future considerations for industry sustainability leadership
