Course Description

We find that a large percentage of people in the injection molding field are intimidated by the math required to take molding classes.  This class will use presentations to shed light on the equations that govern the injection molding process, group work to learn how those equations can be used in the plant, and individual work to verify that each student walks away with a solid understanding of the material. This course will strengthen individual’ math skills and allow them to better understand any future PCE injection molding courses.

We will help you answer the following questions:

What is my plastic injection pressure?

  • Calculating intensification ratio

Is my machine injecting as fast as it says it is?

  • Calculating expected and actual fill speeds

Is my screw design correct for the resin I’m molding?

  • Calculating compression ratio and L/D

How much tonnage should I use for my mold?

  • Calculating projected area of the mold

Discussing the relationship between force (tonnage), pressure and area

Instructor(s): Plastics Selection, Design, and Processing course facilitators are from the Polymers Center of Excellence. Each course facilitator is an experienced Plastics Processing facilitator and auditor . PCE facilitators have assisted many companies with the training and implementation of their plastics selection, product design and processing systems. They have developed and conducted material selection, product design and processing system assessments and improvement techniques including the demonstrated specific understanding and implementation techniques related to scientifically based design and processing methodology.

Description:

The Polymers Center of Excellence is a not-for-profit 501(c)6 organization created by the state of North Carolina to increase knowledge, provide technical support, and assist in the development of emerging technologies in the plastics industry.

The Polymer Center was founded in 1972 when the State of North Carolina funded plastics specialists in the Industrial Extension Service program at UNCC. The center, located at that time on the UNCC campus, expanded in 1994 when a joint venture was entered into with NCSU to form PEP (Polymers Extension Program). By 1999, PEP moved off of the UNCC campus and became today’s Polymers Center of Excellence (PCE). In 2012, Polymers Technology Center (PTC) was added for small scale production. Since then, the Polymers Center has continued to impact economic development through education, research and development, and trial production.
